Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay began to develop her artistic and creative side as a child due to her aunt Denise. DuVernay worked as an evening nurse in order to give her mother the space she required during the day to indulge in the passion of literature, art, and theatre. She introduced DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how the arts can serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay was raised by an aunt who was aware of her social circle and taught her to use the arts as a means of expressing herself. Although DuVernay was raised in Compton with her family, she was a summer resident in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family lived for generations. DuVernay's dad recalled the protests for civil rights that took place over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close-by town Selma in Alabama. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would inspire her later to make the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in the state of California in 1990. In 1990, she completed her studies at the Saint Joseph High School located in Lakewood, California. DuVernay began producing television news at the age of a student. Her first job was as an intern at CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of a particular juror. Her work left her dissatisfied in journalism, so she made the decision to go into the field of publicity. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a young publicist for a studio. From this position she started her own company for public relations known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Her agency launched numerous promotional and lifestyle networks that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
